The 2019 Kayak Event was jampacked with participants, sponsors, kayak enthusiasts, and others who were just there to watch the games simply. The Bluegrass River Run, Gun Lake Paddle Battle, and Treasure Island Pirate Paddle were some of the exciting games of the day. The organizers invited former kayak champions to speak and share some of their experiences and how they came to be champions. The people were so excited to get into some of the kayaks and be taught by some coaches and competitors as well.

So what do you need to start learning how to kayak?

Gear And Clothing

Individuals who provide the kayak boat must also provide a coastguard-approved Personal Flotation Device that fits the person who will kayak. He should also provide a right-sized paddle that has been checked for damages. Finally, they can also add bilge pumps and spray skirts for a better and safer kayaking experience.

As for what to wear, your swimsuit or shorts are a must, preferably noncotton. Rashguard tops are great, especially for warm weather. Neoprene footwear and a hat are also necessary for sun protection. In addition, you can also bring along a rain or spray jacket and a lightweight fleece jacket. If you are going out on a colder day, then you must wear a wetsuit.

Personal stuff that you need to bring on your first kayaking adventure include:

  • A lot of water
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Sunglasses
  • First-aid kit
  • Snacks and lunch for a longer ride
  • A whistle in case of emergency

Adjusting Your Kayak

Your kayaking adventure will be more comfortable and stable with a well-adjusted kayak. Before you set out to the lake or sea, adjust your kayak first. Sit on the kayak with your butt firmly planted on the seatback. Adjust yourself in a way that you are sitting upright. The balls of your feet should be positioned on the footpegs, knees slightly bent. Adjust the pegs by tilting and sliding them along a track so that the stopping points are preset. You just simply slide the pegs if you want to get out of the boat. With your knees bent, make sure that they are also both touching each side of the cockpit. This gives you side-to-side control of your boat when you paddle.

Launching Your Kayak

You have to have somebody to help you bring the boat to the water. Place it in a shallow area, perpendicular to the shoreline. Position the bow away from the shore with the stern near the shore. Now put one of your paddles under the deck and fronting the cockpit. Start to stand over the kayak, slowly getting on the cockpit. Once you’ve taken hold of it, settle your butt on the seat, raise your legs, and slide your feet into the pit. When you feel that your butt snugly fits the seat, place your feet on the pegs. Get your paddle and move your kayak forward past the waves. Attach your spray skirt if you brought one.
